It doesn't matter if you want to learn Dutch for business or pleasure - our customised language courses will help you get where you want to be.

General Dutch courses will cover Survival Dutch, allowing you to be comfortable during short visits to the country; polite conversation, practicable vocabulary and a strong grammatical foundation. Business courses are aimed at those wishing to work in the target language - so a working knowledge of etiquette in Dutch business, as well as developing proficient reading and writing skills.

It is your first session and your own requirements, however, which decide the precise content of the course. A Business course will generally include common conversational topics, as well as gaining greater fluency with writing letters and emails in Dutch, as well as using the telephone. In the same vein, the syllabus for General courses is not set in stone - all you need do is ask your teacher.

Typical learners who choose our Business courses are import/export professionals, agents for multi-national companies, and those involved with foreign governments and universities. General courses cater mostly to those who wish to learn Dutch for short trips to (or through) a country where it is widely spoken; as well as those who wish to pass a specific Dutch exam, people who want to buy a home abroad, and people marrying into a Dutch family.

City information

A core city of the UK, famed for many great exports - and not just the exports that have been sent out of the city's famous docks for hundreds of years. As the source of the Beatles and many other musicians of great worth, Liverpool is immensely proud of its role as a driving force of UK culture; and in fact was named European City of Culture for 2008.

With around 450,000 residents in the borough and city, and a further 820,000 in the urban area, Liverpool is a sprawling post-industrial metropolis, and thanks to its sea trade has always attracted plenty of overseas visitors and immigrants, all of which help give those living in the city a fantastic scope for picking up a new language. Almost every European language can be heard around Liverpool, and there are many Chinese and south Asian communities dotted around the city.

Language information

Spoken by over 30 million people around the word, the Dutch language is the native tongue of the Netherlands and is spoken in many other countries throughout Europe and parts of Africa (being the parent language of Afrikaans). Dutch grammar is similar to German, but made easier by the relative lack of morphology (that is, words changing form depending on the role they are playing in a sentence). This gives it an English feel, though the vocabulary features plenty of those lovely lengthy compound words that generally characterise Germanic languages.

Dutch is not traditionally a popular language for non-native speakers to learn, mainly due to the fact that its use is not widespread, and most Dutch speakers are generally proficient in other European languages. However, the number of non-native speakers has surged in recent years.
